Emma Serl’s Intermediate Language Lessons has endured for more than a century because it approaches language as something living. Grammar is learned in the company of excellent writers; composition grows from observation, conversation, and ideas; and children encounter poetry, picture study, dictation, memorization, letter writing, and oral work alongside the formal study of English.

Living Books Press has preserved the substance and character of the original 1914 text while transforming it into a practical write-in edition designed for today's student. Questions, exercises, and assignments are arranged with space for students to respond directly on the page—eliminating the extensive copying required by reproductions of the original book.

The original Intermediate Language Lessons has been divided into three manageable volumes, allowing the work to grow naturally with the student:

Part 1: Lessons 1–100 — Ages 9–10 / Grade 4
Part 2: Lessons 101–195 — Ages 10–11 / Grade 5
Part 3: Lessons 196–301 — Ages 11–12 / Grade 6

Together, the three volumes provide a complete progression through the language arts for these important middle-elementary years.

What’s Inside

Throughout the series, students encounter selections from some of the finest writers in English, including Louisa May Alcott, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Alfred Tennyson, Helen Hunt Jackson, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Edward Everett Hale, George MacDonald, and William Shakespeare.

Lessons develop skill in:

  • Grammar and correct word usage

  • Written and oral composition

  • Literature and poetry study

  • Narration and conversation

  • Dictation

  • Memorization and recitation

  • Letter writing

  • Outlining

  • Debate and oral presentation

  • Picture study

Rather than treating grammar as an isolated collection of rules, Serl places the study of language within literature, poetry, observation, and meaningful expression.

A Thoughtfully Improved Edition

Living Books Press has carefully redesigned all three volumes to make Serl’s work more beautiful and easier to use while retaining the richness of the original.

Improvements include:

  • A spacious write-in format

  • Enhanced photographs and art reproductions

  • Biographies of contributing authors

  • Complete poems when the original includes only excerpts

  • Bold type highlighting important grammar principles and rules

  • Clearer identification of directions and dictionary work

  • Careful editing and clarification where helpful

Because this bundle is digital, you receive all three volumes for immediate download, ready to print as you reach each new stage of the program.

For families who want a literature-rich approach to grammar and composition in the Charlotte Mason tradition, this bundle provides three years of thoughtful language study in one complete collection.
